Discussing Islam’s Role in Freedom, Peace, and Civilization, FDI UIN Jakarta Holds the 10th International IDIC Conference Again

Faculty of Islamic Studies, UIN News Online — The Faculty of Islamic Studies (FDI) at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta has resumed holding the 10th International Dirasat Islamiyah Conference (IDIC) after a pause last year. This annual conference was conducted in a hybrid format, combining onsite sessions at the FDI Hall and online participation via Zoom, on Wednesday (May 14, 2025).

Carrying the theme Daur al-Islam fi al-Hurriyah, wa al-Salam, wa al-Hadarah (The Role of Islam in Freedom, Peace, and Civilization), the event was officially opened by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Tholabi Kharlie, MA., following welcoming remarks from the Dean of FDI, Dr. Yuli Yasin, MA.

In his keynote speech, Prof. Tholabi emphasized the importance of the principle of freedom in Islam as taught in the Qur’an. He conveyed that Islam recognizes and upholds the rights to life, freedom of thought, and freedom of expression.

“Jihad in Islam is not an act of aggression or expansion, but a legitimate defense against oppression and aggression,” he asserted.

The conference featured international speakers from various countries. Among them were Prof. Dr. Abdullah Abdul-Ghani Abdullah Sarhan (Egypt), Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mahmoud Al-Jamal (Qatar), Dr. Faraj Al-Sadiq Ali Ashmeilah (Libya), and Dr. Mustafa Abu Bakr (Nigeria), who participated virtually.

Meanwhile, two speakers attended in person: Prof. Dr. Mubarak Saif Hadi Al-Hajiri from Kuwait and Prof. Dr. Amany Lubis from Indonesia, who shared their academic insights directly with the participants.

Through the 10th IDIC, FDI UIN Jakarta aims to further strengthen its international academic network and to provide a platform for Islamic thought to contribute meaningfully to global issues related to the values of freedom, peace, and civilization.
